“Raft III”

Gouache on Panel-Mounted Paper

2020

11.75 x 11.75”

“Out to sea… // I mentioned before that these wreath paintings for SEED VAULT were partially inspired by transoceanic rafting, a concept which is as lonely-feeling to me as it is hopeful… I couldn’t get it out of my head last year as we watched our personal territories contract and the walls of our apartments expand to delineate almost our entire universes, little islands of safety shut off against the new and very few world of pandemic. It’s hard to look at the calendar and realize, just as we here in Germany are squeezing ourselves back into our own little isolated seedpods during another heavy lockdown, that we’ve been at this for a year. Phew. Trying to breathe. I wonder what seeding future worlds will look like. ? // SEED VAULT continues at @talongallery! Contact them for queries. // “Raft III”, 11.75 x 11.75” gouache on panel-mounted paper, 2020.”

“Up until recently i haven’t been very interested in plant identification, mainly because i think it’s valuable to have a direct experiential relationship with Nature outside the bounds of scientific consensus (i.e. other people’s observations & conclusions). so i’ve been quietly in love with the winter plant depicted here, which is common in waste areas, for several years without knowing that it’s evening primrose, which in warmer months has bright yellow blooms and large leaves. knowing its name comes along with information about medicinal use, and that nearly every part of the plant is edible, which makes me feel more receptive towards handed-down knowledge and its role in deepening my understanding of species that are already familiar friends. ⁣

anyway, this is a preview of a piece for my upcoming show for @talongallery called “The Waning Season”, which is mainly about plants i love in their resting states.“

“A current ugly, messy #wip for an upcoming show with @spoke_art! I love these washy #watercolorstages, even if my people look like aliens in them. Some of you have asked about the blotches in the past and the thing is, I’m not worried about those blotchy areas at all. I’ll lift the paint up with some water or add twenty thousand layers of paint over top. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. 🍋✨.”

“Do you want to know what you can paint if you want to paint for hours and hours and feel like you’re getting nowhere? White lace. What do you paint if you want to be up all night long? White lace. What about if you wanted to paint until your eyes ache and your entire soul just spills out onto the paper before you? You guessed it! White lace. ✨ Oh, 4AM, we will be meeting too much this coming month. .
This is a #watercolorpainting. The white is the paper, the black is #watercolor and I’m v tired goodnight.“

“Do you ritualize your art practice? Or rather, what do you do to get in the mood to create? With the whole full time job thing, oftentimes when I get home I don’t feel up to making creative decisions. Even just using my eyeballs to look at things feels difficult after sitting at a computer all day. For the last several weeks I’ve been pushing myself to get in a half hour workout right when I get home, and it’s been helpful in not only making me feel better, but it also creates a sort of barrier between my work day and my creative time. That barrier allows me to settle into a deeper mental state quicker than if I just try to get into my studio right after work.
Anyways, I’ve been all about tiny rituals to trigger my brain into a creative state lately. Let me know if you have any!

Materials for this study: Lukas watercolors from @jerrysartarama @jerrysartists  and Daniel Smith watercolors for this. Also that @finetec silver. Lukas colors: Lemon Yellow, Cad Yellow Light, Magenta, Cyan, and Paynes Grey. Daniel Smith colors: Opera Pink, Pthalo Turquoise, and Pthalo Blue.“

“Wither”

Gouache, Watercolor and Colored Pencil on Paper

9″ x 12″

“Wither • 9” x 12” • gouache, watercolor, and colored pencil on paper⁣

My solo show “Ornamental” opens tonight, 6-9PM, at @gallerynucleus in LA alongside @nicodelort’s show “Azure”⁣

Ornamental explores the pervasiveness of exotic ornamental plants in gardens and neighborhoods, their displacement of native plants and wildlife habitat, and the arbitrary value judgements that arise when our understanding of the species around us is uprooted from any meaningful relationship with local ecology.⁣
In the work, beloved varieties of ornamental plants are viewed alongside the bodies of the few animals that are able to subsist within our sterile and carefully curated yards and urban spaces. Their corpses interrupt wallpaper-like compositions and dangle amid the blossoms like perverse decorations.⁣
As the pieces for this show came together I moved into a house with a yard and began gardening for the first time. Informed by our attempts to convert this neglected rental property into the start of a native plant garden and wildlife habitat, these paintings are part tribute to the melancholy beauty of the dying, pest-ridden plants that have come into my care, and part condemnation of the mindset of control and colonization that permeates the way we shape the stolen land we live on in our choices of what to sow and who to poison.“

“Curiosity”

Acrylic on Mapel Panel

Square 24″

2019

“Scroll for details 👀
My new painting ‘Curiosity’ will also show for the first time in the Flora & Fauna Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum @mesaartscenter opening reception TONIGHT Fri 13th 6-9pm
(Curiosity, 24” square, acrylic on maple panel, 2019)
Special thanks to @gonzalesfrank, I’m proud to be in such a talented lineup!

Sadly I can’t make it to the opening tonight (😥) but luckily the paintings will be there! UPS accidentally lost them for a month. They flew all the way from their destination in Arizona, to Ohio, to NJ, and finally I tracked them down in NYC! After some sleepless nights the paintings finally arrived safely at the museum. Phew!
These two* paintings went on an adventure! (*see yesterdays post)! 😰😅 What company do you ship art through? I’ve heard war stories from many artists about shipping artwork, so I’m trying to figure out the best company to use in the future…thanks! 🥰 Xoxoxox.”
