“Up until recently i haven’t been very interested in plant identification, mainly because i think it’s valuable to have a direct experiential relationship with Nature outside the bounds of scientific consensus (i.e. other people’s observations & conclusions). so i’ve been quietly in love with the winter plant depicted here, which is common in waste areas, for several years without knowing that it’s evening primrose, which in warmer months has bright yellow blooms and large leaves. knowing its name comes along with information about medicinal use, and that nearly every part of the plant is edible, which makes me feel more receptive towards handed-down knowledge and its role in deepening my understanding of species that are already familiar friends.
anyway, this is a preview of a piece for my upcoming show for @talongallery called “The Waning Season”, which is mainly about plants i love in their resting states.“

“A current ugly, messy #wip for an upcoming show with @spoke_art! I love these washy #watercolorstages, even if my people look like aliens in them. Some of you have asked about the blotches in the past and the thing is, I’m not worried about those blotchy areas at all. I’ll lift the paint up with some water or add twenty thousand layers of paint over top. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. 🍋✨.”
“Do you want to know what you can paint if you want to paint for hours and hours and feel like you’re getting nowhere? White lace. What do you paint if you want to be up all night long? White lace. What about if you wanted to paint until your eyes ache and your entire soul just spills out onto the paper before you? You guessed it! White lace. ✨ Oh, 4AM, we will be meeting too much this coming month. .
This is a #watercolorpainting. The white is the paper, the black is #watercolor and I’m v tired goodnight.“

“Detail of something for my upcoming solo show “Ornamental”, opening next month at @gallerynucleus.
as i’ve been making this body of work i’ve started gardening for the first time, and also learning about the negative impacts that ornamental plants have on biodiversity. most of the cultivated exotic plants we put in our gardens can’t act as hosts for young insects, who have evolved alongside native plants and depend on them for reproduction. loss of insect and pollinator population has cascading ecological effects, including directly reducing reproductive success in bird populations.
i’ve always understood myself to be a person who picks up and cares for what others have discarded and devalued, so the process of tearing out and cutting down most of the plants on our neglected rental property, either because they are invasive or can’t survive in the conditions they were planted in, is strange to me. as we try to convert our yard into something closer to a habitat that can support wildlife, it’s amazing to learn about and form new relationships with native plants, but devastating that i’m only now learning the names of the species that for centuries covered the earth this house stands on. as i decide what to do with the patch of lily of the valley that the slugs have been munching on, i wrestle with how fucked up it is that i have such a strong nostalgic attachment to plants grown purely for aesthetic value, rather than to ones that fulfill important roles in the ecosystem around me or could provide me with food or medicine. as we displace the rats that nested in an overgrown corner of the yard and let the dandelions go to seed, our neighbors poison everything wild that overflows from our yard into theirs, and i know that our offering of a tiny square of garden will only ever be a cheap imitation of wilderness in a neighborhood criss-crossed with pavement, where people own stolen land and put up fences and use pesticides and water the grass, that like burying roadkill, all of this is a hollow gesture. all i ever have to offer is apologies.“
